Autumn Sage

Autumn Sage

Brief Description

The Autumn Sage is a small shrub boasting flowers of multiple colors. It’s a great addition to any landscape because of its beautiful flowers and ease of care. It’s also been known to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The botanical name is in honor of Josiah Gregg who discovered the Autumn in Texas in the mid 1800’s.

Origin

Texas & Mexico

Description

Common Name – Autumn Sage

Botanical Name – Salvia Greggii

Plant Type – Evergreen & Deciduous

Mature Size – 2 to 3 Feet Tall & Wide

Sun Exposure – Full Sun

Bloom Time – Summer

Flower Color – Too many to list

Hardiness Zone – 6 to 9

Planting

Due to the Autumn being relatively small, you can fit it into a lot of areas. Just keep in mind that they require full sun. Give it an average amount of water during infancy, then reduce watering once established.

Care

Autumn is very easy to take care of. During the growing season, it should grow relatively evenly, but if you see a branch growing ‘wild,’ just trim it off. If you want more flowers during the growing season, deadhead the flowers. During late winter you need to trim the Autumn down to 4 to 6 inches, which will provide fresh, healthy growth & flowers during the growing season. Because it’s native to Texas and Mexico, it’s drought tolerant, which allows you to plug all of its emitters except on and it’ll thrive. In climates that have extremely cold winters, the Autumn will be deciduous, but where the winters are mild, they’re evergreen.

Flowers

Autumn Sage has small, bell-shaped flowers that come in many different colors.

Varieties

With a name like ‘Burgundy Seduction,’ you probably know exactly what color this variety is. ‘Flame’ is another great selection with its crimson bright flowers. Do your research because there are so many colors to choose from!

Invasive

It is not invasive.

Lastly, we highly recommend Watter’s Garden Center, Mortimer Nursery, or Prescott Valley Nursery as great places to both purchase shrubs & trees but to also ask questions because these are the experts.
