Seasonal Tips

Pre-emergent Herbicides and Your Yard

The thing about Prescott is that the landscaping is unique here. That means working with a professional who truly understands that, and can offer important help and advice.

For one thing, stop relying on the internet for the answers to your questions. Too many articles floating around out there are not written by an expert who actually works in the industry. You may be turning to a source that is misinformed in the first place, therefore only continuing to spread more erroneous data.

Ever hear the one about thick lawns not requiring this type of treatment? If so, forget it! There is less of a likelihood, sure, due to the grass’ ability to shade the soil surface. However, in spring and summer, it can be difficult to maintain this same level of lushness, which means your lawn is more susceptible.

Another common misconception is that if you have had no prior issues with your lawn, you won’t need pre-emergents. In other words, if your lawn has not had problems with weeds in recent previous years, there are probably still no weed seeds present, so you can skip treatment. Seeds are transported via animals or even wind, so they can appear at any time. Plus, these seeds are viable for a lengthy amount of time and can sprout when you least expect it.

So, isn’t spot treatment the better way to go? Some people spot treat areas where weeds commonly sprout, or treat just areas where weeds actually begin to develop. The approach that makes more sense is to treat the entire yard, to avoid the development of weeds, with special emphasis on areas that tend to get weeds, like along driveways.
