Spirea
The Spirea is almost a must-have for your landscape. It has deep-purple-blue gorgeous flowers that bloom from late Summer into Fall. It has an elegant and clean appearance that’s easy to care for. They grow up to 5 feet tall & wide and have a beautiful, compact, mounding shape, which is aesthetically pleasing.
Eastern & Southern Asia
Common Name – Spirea
Botanical Name – Caryopteris Clandonensis
Plant Type – Deciduous
Mature Size – 3 to 5 feet tall and wide
Sun Exposure – Full Sun
Bloom Time – Summer
Flower Color – Deep Blue
Hardiness Zone – 5 to 9
Because the Spirea is relatively small, it opens up even more available areas for planting. Keep in mind that it does thrive with full sun, so that will partially dictate where you plant it.
When the Spirea is established, pull the emitters away from the base and put them to the canopy to promote drought tolerance and strength. Also make sure to not over-water it, and if anything, err on less water than too much water. In order to produce strong new growth and vibrant flowers, cut either ⅓ or ½ of the Spirea every spring.
The flowers are typically a blueish-purplish hue and form beautiful clusters throughout the Spirea. If you want to promote flowers, give it some fertilizer in spring and early summer and you’ll be rewarded with pure beauty. Additionally, if you dead-head the flowers, then that will also promote more flowers.
