Why Do Blue Spruce Trees Die so Suddenly?

We have encountered several clients who have experienced the loss of a blue spruce tree, and the process seems to happen so suddenly. A comment that we hear frequently might sound something like, “It was perfectly fine last week, and now this week it is completely dead!” This is a heartbreaking experience, as the blue spruce tree is greatly loved by many for its unique beauty and evergreen quality.

So what happened to the blue spruce tree? The reality is that this tree did not die suddenly. It has been in the process of dying for several months or even years. It simply did not show until it was just too late and nothing could be done to save the tree.

It is important to be proactive in maintaining the health of your plants. Here are some important steps to take to optimize the health of your plants:

• Watering Properly – Whether it be with a hose or through your irrigation system, frequency of watering is important. A good rule of thumb is to water once per week. If the tree looks stressed, water more. Make sure this this is a deep watering, not just a light misting. LOCATION of water is also important. Watering next to the trunk of the tree will not be effective. Make sure you slow water in the active root zone of the tree, which generally starts around the outer edge of the tree canopy and extends  out from there, generally to twice or more of the canopy width.
• Feeding Properly – A regular application of Root n Grow, from Watter’s Garden Center is a great way to feed. It will be especially important to feed in the fall and winter time to help your plants defend against the harsh winter elements. Something high in phosphorus is critical leading into winter time.
• Proper Soil Amendment – You can achieve this by using organic materials such as Humic Acid and mulch. Apply Humic acid and cultivate it into the ground so that plants can continue to have proper access to nutrients and water. Mulch on the surface of the active root zone can greatly benefit the tree, as well.
