Purple Leaf Plum

Purple Leaf Plum

Brief Description

The Purple Leaf Plum is a wonderful addition to your landscape because the foliage is purple, while most of the other plants & trees are green. They’re medium in size, which gives you more options for where you can plant them. They also have beautiful pink flowers for a short time in the summer.

Origin

Europe & Asia

Description

Common Name – Purple Leaf Plum

Botanical Name – Prunus Cerasifera

Plant Type – Deciduous

Mature Size –  up to 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide

Sun Exposure – Full Sun

Hardiness Zone – 5 to 8

Planting

This tree should be planted in a prominent position because of its unique purple leaves. Keep in mind when selecting a location that it grows up to 20 feet wide, so keep it away from structures. Once you plant it, don’t forget to install tree stakes, as this will keep the tree from being injured by the wind.

Care

The Purple Leaf Plum is an easy tree to care for. We recommend that during winter the tree receives a thinning, as it keeps things more orderly through the years. Remove the tree stakes once the tree is established and move the emitters away from the base a couple feet. This will force the roots to grow out and away from the trunk, which will help with strength and drought tolerance. One yearly fertilization would never hurt either.

Varieties

While there are a couple varieties, whatever they’re selling at the nursery will be great.

Invasive

This tree is not invasive

Lastly, we highly recommend Watter’s Garden Center, Mortimer Nursery, or Prescott Valley Nursery as great places to both purchase shrubs & trees but to also ask questions because these are the experts.
